Norm violations and punishments across human societies

چکیده
Abstract Punishments for norm violations are hypothesized to be a crucial component of the maintenance cooperation in humans but rarely studied from comparative perspective. We investigated degree which punishment systems were correlated with socioecology and cultural history. took data Standard Cross-Cultural Sample database coded ethnographic documents sample 131 largely nonindustrial societies. recorded whether concerned adultery, religion, food, rape, or war cowardice sanctions reputational, physical, material, execution. used Bayesian phylogenetic regression modeling test culture-level covariation. found little evidence signals types, suggesting change relatively quickly over evolutionary that reputational was associated egalitarianism absence food storage; material presence physical moderately greater dependence on hunting; execution social stratification. Taken together, our results suggest role kind vary both by severity violation, also specific socio-economic system society.

Costly punishment across human societies.
Recent behavioral experiments aimed at understanding the evolutionary foundations of human cooperation have suggested that a willingness to engage in costly punishment, even in one-shot situations, may be part of human psychology and a key element in understanding our sociality. However, because most experiments have been confined to students in industrialized societies, generalizations of thes...
متن کاملNorm internalization in artificial societies
Internalization is at study in social-behavioural sciences and moral philosophy since long; of late, the debate was revamped within the rationality approach to the study of cooperation and compliance since internalization is a less costly and more reliable enforcement system than social control. But how does it work? So far, poor attention was paid to the mental underpinnings of internalization...
متن کاملMonitoring norm violations in multi-agent systems
The use of norms is widely accepted as an effective approach to control and regulate the behaviour of agents in multiagent systems. Existing work on normative multi-agent systems has mainly focussed on how norms can influence the behaviour of agents by assuming that the agents’ behaviours are perfectly monitored. In this paper we focus on monitoring mechanisms, propose different types of monito...
متن کاملAntisocial punishment across societies.
We document the widespread existence of antisocial punishment, that is, the sanctioning of people who behave prosocially. Our evidence comes from public goods experiments that we conducted in 16 comparable participant pools around the world. However, there is a huge cross-societal variation. Some participant pools punished the high contributors as much as they punished the low contributors, whe...
متن کاملSocial Norm Recommendation for Virtual Agent Societies
Norms express expectations about behaviours of interacting entities in both human and software agent societies. While humans naturally possess the ability to recognize existing norms and learn new ones, software agents representing human users (e.g. avatars in virtual worlds) have to be endowed with such capabilities. Such a norm recognizing and learning agent, using observed actions and intera...
